1965–1980
Generation X
Defined by Pew Research Center — also called Gen X.
Named for Douglas Coupland's 1991 novel, though the term is older.
Where the edge is disputed
1965. The first year after the recorded baby boom ended, and Pew's first year of Generation X. Strauss and Howe, who call the cohort the 13th Generation, start it earlier, in 1961.
How old this cohort is now
Someone born on 1 January 1965, the earliest possible date in this range, is now 61. Someone born on 31 December 1980, the latest, is now 45. Both are worked out from today's date, the day this page was built — for an age that stays current, use the calculator on the relevant year's page.
