Three things a quick birthday lookup gets wrong
- Commonly said “Sign dates are fixed.”
- In fact The sun enters each sign at an instant that falls about six hours later each year and jumps back most of a day at each leap year. So the day a sign changes moves about: between 1920 and 2026 the sun changed sign on 32 different dates, counted in UTC, and on those days the answer depends on the year and the hour. - Commonly said “The Chinese animal is the year modulo twelve.”
- In fact The lunar year begins between 21 January and 20 February, so a birthday before it belongs to the previous animal. Someone born on 25 January 1990 is a Snake, not a Horse. Where the year actually starts

- In fact The American list gave March bloodstone when it was drawn up in 1912, with aquamarine as the alternate; since 1952 aquamarine has come first.
