The short version

BirthAlmanac has no accounts and no database of visitors. There is nothing to sign up for, nothing to log in to, and no form on this site that sends anything anywhere. The date you type into the calculator never leaves your browser unless you send someone a link to it yourself, and neither does anything else the calculator works with.

The only information that reaches us is a count of page views, in aggregate and with no identifier attached, and whatever you choose to put in an email if you write to us.

No advertising script is loaded and no advert is shown.

Who is responsible

This site is operated by Inyonitech Solutions (Pty) Ltd, a company registered in South Africa. The company is the responsible party under the Protection of Personal Information Act, and the controller under the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation where those apply. Our Information Officer is registered with the Information Regulator and can be reached at hello@birthalmanac.com.

What we do not collect

• No accounts, sign-ups, usernames or passwords. There is nothing to register for.
• No contact forms. The only way to reach us is by email, which you choose to send.
• No newsletter, no mailing list, no marketing.
• No session recording, heat maps or behavioural profiling.
• No logging of your activity on our own servers. The site is static files.

Your birth date stays in your browser

The date calculator on this site runs entirely on your own device. It works out your star sign, birthstone, birth flower, weekday, age, generation, Chinese animal, life path number and the phase of the moon with arithmetic, astronomical formulae and a table of the sun's crossing times, all of which arrive with the page and run inside it.

To do that it reads two things from your browser: today's date, from your device's clock, and your time zone setting (a name such as Africa/Johannesburg), so that it can work out your birthday as a day in your own time zone and tell whether the sun changed sign during it. Only when it did does the calculator show two more fields: an optional time of birth, and a list of time zones taken from your browser's own list, with yours already chosen.

All of it stays in the page. Your birth date, the time of birth, the time zone and anything else you type or choose are never sent by this site to us or to anyone else, never stored and never logged, and no cookie or other storage is used to remember them. The birthday comparison, the tarot draw, the card search and the birth-card tool work the same way. If you would rather not type a date at all, every date and year already has its own page: browse to it instead from every date of the year.

Under a complete answer there is a Copy link button, and a Share button where your browser offers a share sheet. The link they make carries the date you entered, and the time and time zone too if you gave a time of birth, after a # sign; a browser never sends the part of an address after the # to a server, so opening the link asks us for the page and nothing more. The page takes the date out of the address as it opens, before any other script on the page runs, and if the part after the # is changed while the page is open, it takes it out again as soon as the browser reports the change. The link goes wherever you send it. The birthday comparison's Copy link works the same way: its link carries the dates after a #, and never the names you gave them. Save as a picture draws the image inside the page and saves it to your device; nothing is uploaded.

What is stored on your device

Nothing. BirthAlmanac sets no cookies, writes nothing to local storage, and keeps no other record on your computer or your phone. There is no key to list and nothing for you to clear. The cookies and storage page says the same thing at more length.

Light and dark follow whatever your system is set to. That is read from the browser as the page is drawn and is never written down, so the site behaves identically with storage blocked entirely.

Who serves the pages

The site is static files, served by Cloudflare. Like any host, it sees the IP address, the browser's user agent and the time of each request, because it cannot deliver a page without them. Those logs belong to the host and are kept under its own policy; we do not read them, download them or keep a copy.

Website statistics

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views. It is cookieless, sets no identifier on your device, and does not follow you to other sites. It reports the page, the referrer, the browser and the country, and totals such as how many people viewed a page. It does not tell us who you are and we cannot connect a visit to a person.

No Google Analytics, no tag manager, and no social media pixel is used anywhere on this site.

Advertising

No adverts run on this site and no advertising script is loaded. An application to Google AdSense has not yet been made. If that changes, this page will say so before it does, and the consent arrangements will be described here.

If you email us

Writing to hello@birthalmanac.com is the only way to send us anything. We use what you send only to answer you. Correspondence is kept for up to twelve months and then deleted, unless we are required to keep it longer. We do not add you to a list and we do not pass your address to anyone.

Notable births and deaths

Every date page names people born on that day and people who died on it, and the month pages name some of those born. Each entry is a name, which is the title of the person's article on the English Wikipedia; a birth year and, where it applies, a death year; and a short description of who the person is. The years and the description come from Wikidata, which publishes under a CC0 licence. Wikidata's descriptions are free text that anyone can edit, so each one is checked before it is shown; one that fails is corrected by hand or replaced with a plain line built from Wikidata's own record of the person's occupation and nationality. Where a birth was recorded in the old calendar, a note says so. Nothing is inferred beyond that, and there are no photographs. Living people appear. No living person is described here by an offence, whether or not it is a matter of record, and nothing is repeated that treats an accusation as a finding.

This is personal information and we treat it as such. We publish it on the basis of legitimate interests — section 11(1)(f) of the Protection of Personal Information Act, and Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR where that applies. It is collected from those public sources rather than from each person, which section 12(2)(a) of the Act allows for information the person concerned has already deliberately made public. We do not write to each person first, because contacting several thousand people to tell them their year of birth is on a calendar page would be a greater intrusion than the entry itself. The Act excuses that notice where giving it is not reasonably practicable, at section 18(4)(e); the GDPR allows the same reasoning at Article 14(5)(b), and this page is the notice it requires instead. An entry is kept for as long as the page is published and removed as soon as it is asked for.

If you would like a name removed, write to hello@birthalmanac.com and it will be taken down. No reason is needed and none will be asked for.

Your rights

Where we hold personal information about you, you have the right to ask for a copy, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, and to object to our using it. Write to hello@birthalmanac.com and we will answer.

In practice that is one of two things. The first is an email you sent us. The second is an entry in the notable births and deaths described above: those rights apply to it in full, the right to object included, and asking for removal is the whole procedure.

If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa, to the Information Commissioner's Office in the United Kingdom, or to the data protection authority where you live in the European Union.

Children

This site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect anything from anyone under 18. Since the site collects nothing from anyone, there is nothing held about a child for us to delete.

Changes

If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it. We do not make a change here quietly and describe it later.
