The date behind the standard example

25 January is the date this site uses to show the mistake: someone born on 25 January 1990 belongs to the Earth Snake, not the Metal Horse, because the new year of 1990 did not come until 27 January. 1990 is one of 91 years from 1920 to 2026 in which this date fell before the new year. In the other 16 the new year had already arrived, and in four of those it arrived on the day itself.

Those four were 1944, the Wood Monkey; 1963, the Water Rabbit; 1982, the Water Dog; and 2020, the Metal Rat. After 2020 the engine does not put the new year on 25 January again until 2096, so for a long time to come a 25 January birthday will take the animal of the year before unless the new year has come earlier still, as it did on 22 January 2023.

The sign is simpler: 25 January was Aquarius from midnight to midnight in every year from 1920 to 2026, and in every time zone.

Which Chinese animal, by year

From 1920 to 2026 the lunar new year, reckoned in Beijing, came after 25 January in 91 of the 107 years, and in those years a birthday on it belonged to the animal of the year before; in the other 16 the new year had already begun. It was the first day of the new year itself in 1944, 1963, 1982 and 2020.
